In need of a hero

A story about life immitating art. This will be interesting to those of you who have seen the “We Can Be Heroes” series put together by Chris Lilley. The show followed five Australian of the Year nominees, one of whome was Phil Olivetti, who nominated himself after saving school kids who were stranded on a jumping castle that flew up into the air.

The news this morning is reporting on a real life Phil Olivetti story, but unfortunately, two people died in this situation.

The Age reports:

Inflatable castle takes off, killing two
Two people were killed and several others injured in England when a massive inflatable sculpture tore free from its moorings in a gust of wind today…

“Talk about a rough day at work!”

This is clever.

Don’t push the red button!

So close… (2)

It’s been a while since I updated everyone on the progress of the house, so I will do so now.

After several weeks of being “right to settle next week”, the final compliance certificates were issued by council yesterday. That means, according to them, all the works have been completed satisfactorily and in accordance with the plans. I can’t comment on that because the last time we were inside to have a look was 2 weeks ago, and there were still a few things left to do then.

As far as I’m aware the carpet still hasn’t been laid, but that should only take half a day at the most. We need to have the floorboards polished this week, but that’s up to us, not the vendor.

Speaking of the vendor, he wants to meet us at the house this week to go over everything and make sure we are happy, so settlement should be sorted by this Friday or early the following week. It’s within sight now and we are very happy!

I’ll report any developments as they come to hand.

The poor Bombers. They were so close to having a win today against the Saints. They were in front for almost the entire game, only to be pipped at the post by 3 points. That makes 14 straight losses, equaling the longest ever losing streak in the club’s history. Playing Carlton next week gives us a chance to avoid setting a new record, but I’m not holding my breath.

Not so del.icio.us

I’ve just been browsing around del.icio.us to waste some time, and have made some disturbing discoveries.

First, the websites some people choose to bookmark can be very strange.

Second, a person who goes by the username elliefish, has a very bad habbit of tagging sites about underware with the tag “damon“. This is upsetting to me. What have I done to deserve this kind of association? I have listed a couple of the more “interesting” undie sites below:

Welcome to Linux

I have just scrapped my old copy of Windows in exchange for a brand-spankin-new install of Ubuntu Linux. Why would I do such a thing, you might ask. Let me tell you why:

  1. It’s free.
  2. Almost all software for it is also free.
  3. It’s said to be more stable than Windows – no more BSOD.
  4. It’s secure.
  5. I can do just about everything with it that I can do with Windows. For the software that absolutely must run under Windows, I have my laptop that still has XP Home installed.

I must say, I have been quite impressed so far. I did the first installation a few days ago and was playing around, trying to learn the basics. I had used the automatic partitioning option in the easy-to-use installation program, but wasn’t happy with what it did for me. So Last night I started again, arranged the partitions as I wanted and the whole installation only took about 15 minutes. Much faster than Windows XP.

Now I just need to get a handle on the command line stuff, and how extra drives are mounted in folders, rather than as a physical drive. Then I should be right.

Anyway, I’m going to go and continue being a nerd. Have a nice day.

Wanna be an iDJ?

Have you ever thought to yourself: “Gee, I love this playlist I’m listening to, I bet it would get the crowd pumping!”? Well now you have the opportunity to put it to the test.

There is a rising phenomenon of iPod nightclubs and dance parties happening all over the place. Basically, you rock up with your ‘Pod in pocket, take a number and wait. Numbers are drawn out of a hat and that person gets some time to spin some tunes. The appeal is that you have the same chance of being called to the DJ booth to play your fav. tunes as Sasha or Phil K would have. Also, I guess you get a nice eclectic mix of music to listen to as well.

I still don’t think I would prefer it to jumping on my Technics and playing real records, but that’s a personal choice I suppose.
